Cinema has the ability to materialize and make tangible the weaving of ideas and thoughts with the patterns and motions of everyday life. CRACKING THE FRAME PRESENTS investigates this aspect with a focus on documentaries and the practice of filmmaking as a critical inquiry into a narrative reality. Can we depict a dialogue between the context and the reality that emerges within the frame of cinema? Stepping in and outside the frame of a story from the perspective of the filmmakers, the characters, and the viewers, - these questions are investigated with different partners in consecutive settings, contexts and audiences in the city. Moving to and from the domain of cinema and the arts, the program of events starts with a film program at Rialto consisting of recent (mainly première) documentary films about artists that seek to push the boundaries of documentary cinema, and feature films by contemporary artists that either start from lived experience, or that start from reality as object of study.
